On Anamorphosis and Prophecy
‘Telescoping’ is a common way of explaining the approach of biblical prophecy. Biblical prophecy, while standing at a distance, shows what is far off and makes it seem near, while not always communicating the things between. While in seminary, my wife suggested that a better analogy than telescoping is anamorphosis: art that is distorted and lacking full meaning unless observed from a specific vantage point.
For the biblical writers this vantage point is Christ himself. This is what Luke 24 and the book of Hebrews are arguing.
Thank you for the credit!
I would say the George Rousse piece most fully depicts the idea (and is what I had in mind) as it creates a unified piece using objects in a range of distances from the viewer.
